IP Ratings for Electrical Enclosures
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings, defined by IEC 60529, indicate how well an enclosure resists intrusion from solids (like dust or tools) and moisture.
Each rating uses two digits — the first for solids, the second for water protection.

First Digit – Protection from Solids
IP2X: No entry of 12.5mm objects (e.g. fingers or tools)
IP3X: No entry of objects ≥ 2.5mm
IP4X: No entry of objects ≥ 1.0mm
IP5X: Limited dust ingress (no harmful deposits)
IP6X: Completely dust-tight
Second Digit – Protection from Moisture
IPX0: No water protection
IPX2: Protected from vertically falling water drops
IPX3: Protected from water sprays up to 60° from vertical
IPX4: Protected from splashing water in all directions
IPX5: Protected from low-pressure water jets
IPX6: Protected from strong water jets
IPX7: Protected from temporary immersion (15cm – 1m depth)
