Stainless Steel Guide

Superior Surface Finish. Built for Harsh Environments.

At B&R Enclosures, we manufacture 316 stainless steel enclosures designed to perform in the toughest environments. Through careful material selection and advanced finishing techniques, our enclosures deliver long-term durability, corrosion resistance, and a premium finish.

We are proud to manufacture in line with Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA) guidelines, ensuring consistent quality and performance across our stainless steel range.

Why 316 Stainless Steel?

Grade 316 stainless steel is widely recognised for its superior corrosion resistance, particularly in environments exposed to chlorides such as coastal areas or high-salinity inland regions.

Compared to 304, 316 stainless steel:

  • Offers greater resistance to pitting corrosion
  • Performs better in marine, industrial, and washdown environments
  • Is suitable for food processing and hygienic applications
  • Maintains strength and durability in harsh conditions

Often referred to as “marine grade” stainless steel, 316 is commonly used in:

  • Coastal infrastructure and wharf installations
  • Food and beverage processing equipment
  • Chemical, mining, and industrial applications
  • Architectural components in aggressive environments

Surface Finish That Performs

Surface finish plays a critical role in corrosion resistance.

Our enclosures are finished to a Ra ≤ 0.4 μm (No.4 finish), exceeding many industry-standard finishes of 0.5 μm or higher.

According to Australian Stainless Steel Development Association, corrosion resistance can decrease significantly once surface roughness exceeds this threshold.

What this means for you:

  • Reduced salt build-up on the surface
  • Improved resistance to tea staining and corrosion
  • Easier cleaning and maintenance
  • A more consistent, high-quality appearance

Manufactured for Longevity

We use ASSDA-aligned belt grinding and linishing processes to achieve a smooth, consistent surface finish that performs in real-world conditions.

This results in:

  • Longer service life in coastal and high-chloride environments
  • Improved performance in washdown and exposed applications
  • A finish suitable for hygienic and food-grade environments

Built to a Higher Standard

Every detail, from material selection to final finish, is designed to maximise performance in the field.

The result is a stainless steel enclosure that not only lasts longer but also maintains its appearance and integrity over time.
