Delivering Hazardous-Area Safety at the Banyuwangi LPG Terminal

Banyuwangi LPG Terminal in East Java, Indonesia, is a major infrastructure development supporting LPG distribution across East Java and Bali. Designed to store up to 10,000 metric tons of LPG and operate continuously in hazardous conditions, the terminal required highly reliable, explosion-proof equipment capable of withstanding both operational risks and the region’s challenging equatorial climate.

Owned by Pertamina Ltd and Bosowa Ltd, the facility sits within an area where flammable gases, vapours and combustible dusts are frequently present. As the main contractor, Persero Ltd sought equipment that met stringent safety standards while ensuring long-term durability in extreme heat, high humidity, salt-laden coastal air and heavy rainfall.

To meet these requirements, B&R Enclosures was selected to supply specialised hazardous-area enclosures and lighting solutions suitable for the site’s high-risk environment. Working in coordination with project stakeholders, B&R delivered a comprehensive suite of certified equipment to support safe and reliable terminal operations.

B&R supplied non-metallic fluorescent and aluminium flameproof luminaires for the terminal’s LPG control stations. These lights are designed to contain any internal ignition, ensuring an explosion inside the enclosure cannot propagate to the surrounding atmosphere. Additional flameproof floodlights were installed along the main access road on the perimeter of the four 2,500-ton storage tanks. Rated for Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas and vapour environments and engineered to withstand temperatures up to 200°C, these luminaires provide dependable illumination in areas where explosive atmospheres may occasionally arise.

For operational control systems, B&R provided explosion- and fire-resistant aluminium enclosures to house the Motor Operated Valve (MOV) panels responsible for monitoring and regulating high-pressure valves across the facility. These Ex d enclosures were selected for their robust construction, proven reliability and suitability for mission-critical safety applications. Additional 316 stainless-steel flat-roof enclosures were supplied for junction boxes servicing instrumentation throughout the terminal, certified for use in gas and dust hazardous zones (1, 2, 21 and 22).

Through the integration of B&R’s hazardous-area enclosures and lighting systems, the Banyuwangi LPG Terminal was equipped with a durable, compliant and cost-effective safety infrastructure tailored to its demanding operational environment. Officially inaugurated in December 2016, the terminal is now fully operational, supported by reliable explosion-proof systems designed to ensure safety, performance and long-term resilience.
